The Catholic Foundation was formed in 1998 and was initially structured without a formal board. The purpose of the Foundation, when it was initially established, was to set up a separate organization to receive transfers of real estate, endowments and investment portfolios (that accumulated as a result of major transactions and gifts.) With the formation of the new Board of Trustees, as of November 30, 1999, the Foundation was poised to aggressively pursue a broader mission.
Following the reorganization, the Foundation was positioned to provide for the long-term financial support to the ministries of the Archdiocese while providing a comprehensive framework for major gifts/endowments for many of the Catholic organizations within and beyond the territorial boundaries of the Archdiocese. The Foundation focuses on key initiatives that are of primary importance to the future of the Church in northern Colorado.
By virtue of its listing in the Official Catholic Directory, The Catholic Foundation participates in the Group Revenue Ruling exempting entities operated, supervised or controlled by or in connection with the Roman Catholic Church in the United States from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Code. Further, the Foundation is a publicly supported Foundation under Internal Revenue Code Section 509(a)(1) and Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) because it receives substantial support from direct or indirect contributions from the general public. As such, the Foundation receives favorable tax status and is not subject to the tax regulations governing private foundations.
